**Two Pillar Sports partners. One international stage. This Saturday, Hong Kong
China and Manusina Samoa go head-to-head in the final round of the WXV Global Series
Challenger in Hong Kong.**

There are moments in the rugby calendar that feel a little different for us at Pillar
Sports.

This Saturday, **26 September**, two teams we are proud to support will meet on
the same field as **Hong Kong China Women’s XV take on Manusina Samoa** in the final
round of the 2026 WXV Global Series Challenger.

Kick-off is at **3:30 PM HKT** at **Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground**.

## **Two Partners. One Big Match.**

Our partnership with **Hong Kong China Rugby** supports the organisation as its
Official Tape Supplier through 2027, helping its representative teams prepare for
a busy international calendar.

On the other side of Saturday’s match is **Manusina Samoa**, the women’s national
team represented by Lakapi Samoa — another long-standing Pillar Sports partner.
Our partnership with Lakapi Samoa supports its national teams, including Manusina,
as they continue to develop and compete on the international stage.

So, when the whistle goes on Saturday, Pillar Sports will have a unique perspective:**
supporting both sides of the field.**

We won’t be picking a side. We’ll be watching, supporting, and celebrating rugby.

[[

## **Hong Kong China: Building Momentum at Home**

Hong Kong China opened their WXV Global Series Challenger campaign with an impressive
comeback against Brazil, overturning a 14-point deficit to secure a **29–24 victory**
in front of their home crowd.

The team then faced Fiji in Round 2, with Fiji securing an eight-try victory. Hong
Kong China now return to Kai Tak for their final match of the tournament, with the
opportunity to finish their home campaign on a strong note.

For Hong Kong China, the tournament has also marked a significant return to home
international rugby, with the WXV Global Series Challenger providing three high-
level fixtures in front of local supporters.

[[

## **Manusina: Growing Through International Competition**

Manusina Samoa arrive at the final round having faced a demanding tournament schedule.

Samoa opened their campaign against the Netherlands before taking on Spain in Round
2. The team is being coached by **Fuimaono Bella Milo**, who brings extensive experience
from both playing and coaching in Hong Kong rugby.

[[

The final round gives Manusina another opportunity to test themselves against international
opposition and continue building through the competition. As Samoa’s coaching group
has highlighted, this tournament is an important part of the team’s development
and growth.

[[

## **A Match Worth Watching**

The WXV Global Series Challenger brings together six international women’s teams—
Brazil, Fiji, Hong Kong China, the Netherlands, Samoa and Spain — across three rounds
in Hong Kong.

Saturday’s Hong Kong China v Samoa match is part of the final triple-header, alongside**
Fiji v Netherlands** at 12:00 PM and **Spain v Brazil** at 7:00 PM HKT.

### **Watch the Match**

The WXV Global Series is available through **RugbyPass TV**, with additional broadcasters
available in selected markets.

Ground**.

## **Two Teams We’re Proud to Support**

At Pillar Sports, partnerships are about more than putting our name alongside a
team.

It’s about supporting athletes, unions and clubs through the work that happens before
they step onto the field — from preparation and protection to performance.

This weekend, that means watching two of our partners compete against each other
on the international stage.

**Hong Kong China. Manusina Samoa.**

Two teams. Two journeys. One great game of rugby.

We’ll be watching.

---

## **Match Recap**

The final round of the WXV Global Series Challenger delivered a memorable finish
in Hong Kong, with two Pillar Sports partners going head-to-head.

**Manusina Samoa defeated Hong Kong China 34–17** at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground,
securing their first win of the Challenger.

Hong Kong China had opened their campaign with a strong **29–24 comeback victory
over Brazil**, before facing Fiji and then Samoa in their final two matches. Despite
the result, the tournament gave the Hong Kong China women valuable international
competition on home soil.

[[

For Manusina Samoa, the victory provided a strong finish to their campaign and an
important result as they continue building within the international women’s rugby
pathway.

[[

The tournament also saw **Fiji crowned the inaugural WXV Global Series Challenger
champions**, completing a three-match winning campaign after defeating the Netherlands
20–17 in their final match.

[[

For Pillar Sports, it was a special tournament to watch — not only because of the
international rugby on display, but because two teams we are proud to support shared
the same stage.

Congratulations to **Manusina Samoa** on the win, and to **Hong Kong China** on
a memorable home campaign.

We’re proud to support both teams and look forward to seeing what comes next.

**Strapped & Ready.**

## How to Choose a Mouthguard in Hong Kong

- Link: https://pillarsports.com/how-to-choose-a-mouthguard-hong-kong/
- Published: 2026-09-18T08:00:00+08:00
- Author: PSL Media Team

There are three ways to buy a mouthguard in Hong Kong and about a tenfold difference
in price between the cheapest and the dearest. Most people either overpay for protection
they do not need, or buy the cheap one at the pharmacy and stop wearing it by the
third session.

This is what is actually available here, what it costs, and how to work out which
one you need.

## **The three options**

### **1. Stock guards — the pharmacy option**

Pre-formed, no moulding, sold in a blister pack. They arrive one shape and stay
that shape.

Avoid them. A stock guard does not conform to your teeth, so it moves under impact
and you have to bite down to keep it in place — which is exactly what you cannot
do when someone is talking to you or you are breathing hard. Most people who own
one stop wearing it. The cheapest guard is the one you do not wear.

### **2. Boil-and-bite — the sensible default**

Softened in hot water and moulded to your own teeth at home. This is what almost
every club and school player in Hong Kong wears, and for good reason.

**_SafeJawz is Boil-and-bite. [Buy SafeJawz](https://pillarsports.com/product/safejawz-mouthguard-marvel/)_**

The important distinction inside this category is **single-layer versus double-layer**.
A single layer compresses on the first heavy contact and does not recover, so it
stops protecting long before it looks worn out. A double-layer guard has a firmer
outer layer to spread the force and a softer inner layer to hold the fit. The price
difference is small; the difference in protection is not.

### **3. Custom-fitted from a dentist**

Made from an impression or a 3D scan of your teeth. The best fit available, the
thinnest profile for the protection given, and by a distance the most expensive
route.

[⌊a blue ice cream cone⌉⌊a blue ice cream cone⌉[

Worth it if you take contact several times a week, if you have had dental work you
are protecting, or if you compete at a level where a lost tooth is a real career
cost. Not worth it for a child whose teeth are still moving — the guard stops fitting
as the mouth changes.

## **What it costs here**

The OPRO figure comes from a Hong Kong stockist listing and should be confirmed.
The Decathlon, SISU and dental-clinic figures need checking against current local
pricing — do not publish a price you have not seen this month.

| **Option** | **Typical Hong Kong price** | **Verdict** |
| Stock guard, pharmacy | Low | Skip it |
| Boil-and-bite, single layer | Low | Fine for occasional use, replace often |
| **Boil-and-bite, double layer** | **From around HK$220** | **Where most players should land** |
| Premium boil-and-bite (OPRO Silver, Platinum) | Around HK$379 at HK stockists | Good guards, priced at a premium |
| Custom from a dentist | Significantly higher — get a quote | For serious or frequent contact |

## **Where to buy in Hong Kong**

**Decathlon** — the widest cheap range, physical stores across the city, and you
can try sizing in person. Their own-brand guards are entry level; treat them as
a starting point rather than a season’s protection. [Browse Decathlon](https://www.decathlon.com.hk/en-HK/search?query=mouth%20guard&indexName=prod_pim_v1_index&queryID=d609de9dc3e0d9ab93c2d2851a4a3e79),
you can also buy [Pillar Sports tapes products on Decathlon](https://www.decathlon.com.hk/en-HK/search?query=tapes&indexName=prod_pim_v1_index&queryID=ec3c38365a7651d1323f16d09140d410&brand=PILLAR+SPORTS)!

**Escapade Sports and Streamline Sports** — both carry OPRO, both ship locally,
both aimed at the rugby market. If OPRO is the brand you want, they are the straightforward
route. [Browse Streamline Sports](https://streamlinesports.com.hk/search?options%5Bprefix%5D=last&q=mouth+guard&filter.p.product_type=).

**Pillar Sports** — that is us. We distribute[ SafeJawz in Hong Kong](https://pillarsports.com/product/safejawz-mouthguard-marvel/),
hold stock here, price in Hong Kong dollars and ship by SF Express. We also supply
clubs and schools directly, which is worth a conversation if you are kitting out
a squad rather than one player.

**Your dentist** — for custom guards. Ask for a quote before committing; prices
vary considerably between clinics in Hong Kong.

**Carousell and marketplace listings** — a mouthguard is a personal-hygiene item
that sits in someone’s mouth. Buy it new.

**Ordering from overseas** — OPRO, SISU and most of the DTC night-guard brands will
ship to Hong Kong, but you are paying in GBP or USD and waiting on international
post. Check whether a local stockist carries the same model before you do.

## **The brands you will actually see**

An honest read on each. We sell one of these, so weigh that accordingly.

![](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==)

**[OPRO](https://www.opro.com/).** The strongest brand in this market and the one
most Hong Kong rugby players know. Official mouthguard of England Rugby and Wales
Rugby Union, and their Instant Custom-Fit line genuinely narrows the gap to a dental
guard. They are good products at a premium price, and they are widely stocked here.
If budget is not a constraint and you want the safest-known name, this is it.

**[SafeJawz](https://www.safejawz.com/).** What we distribute. Double-layer construction,
developed with dentists, junior and senior sizing, ortho versions for anyone in
braces, and a case with every guard. Cheaper than the OPRO equivalents. The Marvel
range is licensed superhero styling, which is a selling point for a nine-year-old
and irrelevant to a 30-year-old — the guard underneath is the same either way. [Buy SafeJawz](https://pillarsports.com/product/safejawz-mouthguard-marvel/).

![](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==)

**[SISU](https://www.sisuguard.com/).** Very thin profile with a distinctive perforated
design, popular with people who cannot tolerate bulk. Divisive: some people rate
them highly, others find the thinness unconvincing. Harder to find in Hong Kong
than OPRO.

## **How to fit a boil-and-bite guard**

⌊YouTube thumbnail⌉⌊YouTube thumbnail⌉⌊YouTube icon⌉⌊YouTube icon⌉

Most people rush this, and a rushed mould is the main reason a decent guard feels
bad.

 1. Boil the kettle, then let the water stand for 30 seconds. Straight off the boil
is too hot and can over-soften the material.
 2. Submerge the guard for **20–30 seconds**. Not longer.
 3. Lift it out, shake off the water, and test the temperature against your lip before
    it goes near your teeth.
 4. Seat it over the upper teeth and bite down firmly. Then suck in, and press the
guard against your teeth and gums with your tongue and fingers for a further 20
    seconds.
 5. Drop it into cold water to set.

If the fit is wrong, repeat it. The material re-moulds. If it still will not seat
after a second attempt, you have the wrong size.

## **Looking after it in this climate**

Hong Kong humidity is genuinely hard on mouthguards. A guard that goes back into
a case damp, into a kitbag, in August, will grow something.

Rinse in cold water after every session, let it air-dry fully before it goes in
the case, and keep the case ventilated. Never leave it in a car or on a windowsill—
heat warps the mould permanently. Replace it when the bite impressions flatten out
or the edges start to split, which for anyone training two or three times a week
means about once a season.

## **So which one should you buy?**

 * **Playing school or club sport, once or twice a week:** a double-layer boil-and-
   bite. Anything more is over-buying.
 * **Training in a combat gym several times a week:** the same, replaced more often—
or a custom guard if you are competing.
 * **Wearing braces:** an ortho model, and mention it to your orthodontist.
 * **Buying for a child:** junior sizing, boil-and-bite, and expect to replace it
as they grow. A custom guard is wasted on a mouth that is still changing.
 * **Competing at a level where your teeth are part of your livelihood:** see a
   dentist.

For most people reading this, the honest answer is a double-layer boil-and-bite
guard that fits properly and gets worn every session. Which sport you play changes
the details —[ we have broken that down here](https://pillarsports.com/mouthguard-for-your-sport/).

## **FAQ**

**How much should I pay for a mouthguard in Hong Kong?**

A double-layer boil-and-bite guard starts around HK$220. Premium branded versions
run higher, and a custom guard from a dentist is a different order of cost — get
a quote first.

**Is a boil-and-bite mouthguard good enough?**

For the large majority of club, school and gym athletes, yes — provided it is double-
layer and moulded properly. The gap to a custom guard is real but smaller than the
price difference suggests.

**Where can I buy a mouthguard in Hong Kong today?**

Decathlon stores carry entry-level guards off the shelf. Escapade and Streamline
stock OPRO. We ship SafeJawz by SF Express. Dentists make custom guards to order.

**How long does a mouthguard last?**

About a season for someone training two or three times a week. Replace it when the
bite marks flatten or the edges tear.

**Can I put a mouthguard in the dishwasher?**

No. Heat warps it. Cold water and air-drying only.

## Which Mouthguard Do You Actually Need for Your Sport?

- Link: https://pillarsports.com/mouthguard-for-your-sport/
- Published: 2026-09-15T13:01:44+08:00
- Author: PSL Media Team

Every mouthguard on the market claims to be for “all sports”. Most of them are,
in the sense that a bike helmet is for all sports — it will do something, but it
was designed with one thing in mind.

The differences between a rugby gum shield and a boxing mouthguard are real, but
they are smaller and more specific than the marketing suggests. Here is what actually
changes from sport to sport, and what does not.

![](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==)

![](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==)

## **The short answer**

| **Sport** | **What it needs** | **Why** |
| **Rugby** | Double-layer, full upper arch, secure at speed | Impacts come from anywhere, and you need to talk and breathe hard for 80 minutes |
| **Boxing** | Thicker front section, tight retention | Repeated straight impact to the front teeth, and it has to stay put when you get hit clean |
| **Muay Thai** | Same as boxing, plus clinch tolerance | Knees and elbows arrive at angles a boxer never sees |
| **MMA / BJJ** | Slim profile, strong retention | Grappling pressure and accidental knees; a bulky guard gets displaced on the mat |
| **Hockey, lacrosse** | Maximum coverage | Sticks and pucks are harder than fists |
| **Basketball, football** | Basic protection is enough | Elbows and heads, occasionally, rather than constantly |

If you play more than one of these, a good double-layer guard covers all of them.
You do not need one per sport.

## **What actually differs**

Three things change between sports, and everything else is branding.

**Where the impact lands.** Boxing and Muay Thai deliver force straight to the front
teeth, over and over. Rugby delivers it once, hard, from an unpredictable angle —
a shoulder, a knee, the ground. Grappling delivers pressure rather than strikes.
A guard built for repeated frontal impact carries more material at the front; a
guard built for rugby spreads coverage further back.

**How long you wear it.** A rugby player has it in for 80 minutes and needs to call
lineouts through it. A boxer wears it in three-minute rounds and does not need to
speak. This is why rugby players complain about bulk more than boxers do, and why
a slim double-layer guard usually beats a thick single-layer one for rugby even
though the thick one sounds more protective.

**How much it gets grabbed.** In BJJ and MMA, hands and forearms end up across your
face constantly. A guard with a poor mould gets shifted, and a shifted guard protects
nothing. Retention matters more here than raw thickness.

That is the whole list. Colour, branding, and most “technology” claims do not change
the outcome.

## **Rugby**

**Do you need one?** Yes. World Rugby and the Hong Kong Rugby Union both treat mouthguards
as required kit for contact play, and every school and club programme in Hong Kong
will send a player off the pitch without one. Check your own club’s rules before
the first session — some are stricter than the governing body.

**What to look for.** Double-layer construction, full coverage of the upper arch,
and a fit tight enough that you can shout through it. Rugby is the sport where a
badly fitted guard is most obvious, because you are talking constantly and running
out of breath.

**Junior rugby.** Mini and junior sections in Hong Kong start contact early, and
children’s mouths change fast. Buy the junior size, expect to replace it as they
grow, and re-mould rather than hand a guard down.

A double-layer guard like the [SafeJawz Marvel range](https://pillarsports.com/product/safejawz-mouthguard-marvel/)
covers club and school rugby at both junior and senior sizes.

![](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==)

## **Boxing and Muay Thai**

**What changes.** More material at the front, and retention that holds when you
take a clean shot. A guard that moves on impact is worse than useless — it can cut
the inside of your lip on the way.

**What Hong Kong gyms expect.** Most boxing and Muay Thai gyms in Hong Kong will
not let you spar without one, and a lot of them will not let you into a partner
drill either. It is the one piece of kit worth owning before your first class rather
than borrowing.

**On the clinch.** Muay Thai adds knees and elbows from angles boxing does not produce,
and a lot of head movement under pressure in the clinch. The same double-layer guard
works; the fit just has to be good enough that it does not shift when someone is
pulling your head down.

## **MMA and BJJ**

**Slim wins.** Grappling is the sport where an over-thick guard causes problems.
You spend time with weight on your face, breathing through a mouth that is already
half-obstructed, and a bulky guard makes that meaningfully worse.

**Retention over thickness.** The failure mode in grappling is displacement, not
fracture. A well-moulded double-layer guard that stays put beats a thicker one that
gets pushed loose in a scramble.

**Do you need one for BJJ?** For no-gi and any training with strikes, yes. For gi
rolling, most Hong Kong academies leave it optional — but accidental knees to the
face are the single most common way people lose a tooth in training, and they happen
in gi as often as no-gi.

## **Everything else**

**Hockey and lacrosse** are the highest-risk sports on this list and warrant the
most coverage you can tolerate. **Basketball and football** are lower-frequency
but not low-risk — an elbow in a rebound contest does the same damage as a fist.**
Taekwondo** requires a guard in most competition rules, and the junior scene in
Hong Kong is large.

## **If you wear braces**

Do not mould a standard guard over fixed braces. It will not seat correctly, and
it can drag on the brackets. You need an ortho model — a softer channel designed
to sit over the hardware without forcing the teeth.

If you are in braces and playing contact sport, speak to your orthodontist as well.
They will have a view on your specific setup, and it is worth 30 seconds of the
conversation at your next appointment.

## **What does not matter**

**Colour and design.** No effect on protection whatsoever. Worth saying because
it is most of what the marketing is about — including ours.

**“Used by professionals”.** Professional players wear custom guards made from dental
impressions. That a brand sponsors a team tells you about their marketing budget,
not about the guard you are buying off the shelf.

**Gel and strap add-ons.** Straps are required in some youth American football codes
and nowhere in the sports above. A strap on a rugby guard is a snag hazard.

## **Getting the fit right**

A boil-and-bite guard is only as good as the mould, and most people rush it. Thirty
seconds in water just off the boil, seat it on the upper teeth, bite down, then
suck in hard and press it against the teeth and gums with your tongue for a further
20 seconds. Cold water to set. If it is not right, do it again — the material re-
moulds.

## **FAQs**

**What mouthguard do rugby players use?**

At club and school level, almost all use a boil-and-bite double-layer guard. Professional
squads use custom guards made from dental impressions, and increasingly instrumented
ones that measure head impacts — that technology is not yet available at retail.

**Do I need a mouth guard for rugby?**

Yes. It is required kit for contact rugby under World Rugby guidance and by the
Hong Kong Rugby Union, and every club and school programme here enforces it.

**Can I use the same mouthguard for boxing and rugby?**

Yes. A good double-layer guard handles both. Sport-specific designs are a refinement,
not a requirement, unless you are competing at a level where you have a custom guard
made anyway.

**Is a thicker mouthguard better?**

Up to a point, then it works against you. Too thick and you cannot breathe or speak
properly, which means you take it out — and a guard in your sock protects nothing.
Double-layer construction beats raw thickness.

**Do I need a mouthguard for BJJ?**

For no-gi and anything with strikes, yes. For gi rolling most academies leave it
optional, but accidental knees are the commonest cause of dental injury in training,
and they happen in both.

A lot of clubs around the world play more than one format. You might have a full
15s season squad, a handful of players who enter the Tens circuit in the middle
of the year, and a 7s side that shows up at every invitational going. Same club,
same colours — but the kit requirements are not always the same.

The question we get asked regularly when clubs come to us about a custom rugby kit
order: “Can we just use the same jersey across all three?” Sometimes yes. Often
no. And the reason matters more than you might think.

This guide breaks down what actually differs between 15s, 7s, and 10s kit — and
what that means for how you plan your order.

## Why Rugby Format Changes What You Should Order

The three formats of rugby share the same ball and the same try line, but they put
different demands on the body and on the kit. Contact volume, movement patterns,
squad size, and tournament structure all vary — and each of those factors has an
effect on what your teamwear needs to do.

This is not just a technical detail. Getting it wrong means kits that wear out too
fast, squads that show up to a tournament without the right gear, or orders placed
too late to arrive in time. Understanding the differences upfront saves real headaches
down the line.

## Rugby 15s Kit: Built for a Season, Not a Weekend

15s is your standard season format. Weekly competition, heavier contact, more physical
demands on the jersey — especially for forwards.

### What the Kit Needs to Do

15s kits take more punishment than any other format. Scrums, mauls, rucks, lineout
lifting — the collar, shoulder seams, and side panels all face regular stress across
a full season of games and training.

For forward-heavy squads, features like reinforced collar construction and grip
panels on the shoulder are not cosmetic — they are functional. A jersey without
reinforcement at the collar will start separating after a season of scrums. That
is a quality problem, but it is also a fitting problem: forward jerseys and backs
jerseys are typically cut differently.

Durability is the primary specification for 15s kit. You are ordering something
that needs to hold up across a domestic season that can run five to seven months.
Fabric weight, stitch construction, and panel bonding all matter more here than
they do in shorter formats.

### Timeline Considerations

15s seasons in Hong Kong typically kick off in October and run through March, giving
clubs a clear pre-season runway over the mid-year months. Singapore club calendars
follow a broadly similar rhythm, though it’s worth confirming exact dates with your
union each year.

Standard lead time for custom 15s teamwear runs eight to twelve weeks from artwork
approval. If your season opens in early October, your order should be placed no
later than late July or early August. Most clubs that run into problems leave it
until September and then manage the stress of chasing delivery in the week before
the first match.

💡 Pro Tip: If you have forwards and backs in noticeably different jersey sizes,
flag this early in your order. Multi-cut custom orders take slightly longer to produce
than single-cut runs, and it is better to know this before you set your deadline.
Regular fit for the big boys and athletic fit for the slim.

## Rugby 7s Kit: Lighter, Faster, and Often Required as a Full Bundle

7s is a different animal. Less contact, more running, shorter bursts of intensity—
and a tournament structure that compresses everything into a weekend.

### What the Kit Needs to Do

7s kit is typically cut lighter and with a more athletic fit than 15s. The fabric
weight drops, the cut through the torso is slimmer, and there are no collar reinforcements
needed — because the scrum involvement is either minimal or eliminated entirely.
What you want is a jersey that does not create drag, does not trap heat, and moves
with the player rather than against them.

The backs cut used in 7s suits the full squad in this format. Everyone is running.
Even the loosies need the same freedom of movement as a winger.

### Tournament Registration Requires a Full Bundle

Here is the part that catches clubs off guard: most 7s tournaments require teams
to register with a matching kit — jersey, shorts, and socks in matching club colours.
If you show up with matching jerseys and mismatched shorts, you may be asked to
change or risk a penalty.

For clubs ordering 7s teamwear, this means the order is almost never jersey-only.
Plan for a full bundle: jersey, shorts, and socks, all produced in matching sublimation
or the same colour specification.

🎯 This is especially relevant for clubs entering the Hong Kong Tens, Asia Rugby
Sevens Series events, or any invitational where tournament officials check kit compliance
at registration.

### Deadline Pressure Is Real

The 7s tournament calendar in Asia tends to cluster. The Hong Kong Sevens, regional
invitationals, and corporate 7s events all fall in relatively tight windows. Unlike
15s, where you have a clear pre-season runway, 7s entries can come with short notice—
especially invitationals.

This means 7s kit orders need to move fast once a tournament is confirmed. If you
leave it until the entry is accepted, you may already be inside your lead time window.
The safest approach is to have 7s kit either ordered in advance or held in stock
after your main 15s order.

For a full breakdown of how to approach the 7s order process, see [LINK: Spoke 5—
Rugby 7s Kit blog].

## Rugby 10s Kit: The Format That Most Clubs Under-Order For

10s is the most underserved format when it comes to kit planning — and that is partly
because the format itself is still gaining traction in Asia.

### What the Format Looks Like

10-a-side rugby has been growing steadily in the region, driven mainly by independently
run club and social tournaments rather than a single governing body series. The
Hong Kong Tens (now the Tradition HKFC 10s) is one of the most established events
of its kind in Asia, and similar Tens tournaments — from Manila to Pattaya — have
been added to club calendars across the region in recent years. Squad sizes are
smaller than 15s, larger than 7s, and the game plays more like 7s in terms of running
intensity — while still including structured set pieces.

If your club is entering a Tens event, there is a good chance you are drawing from
your main squad. The question is: which kit do you wear?

### Can You Use Your 15s or 7s Kit?

Often yes — with some caveats.

If your 15s kit is a reasonably athletic cut and the fabric is not too heavy, it
will function adequately in a Tens format. If your 7s kit is cut close and light,
it works even better. The main issue comes when clubs have very forward-heavy 15s
jerseys with reinforced collars and grip panels — these are physically heavier garments
and less comfortable for a running-focused format.

The practical answer: if you have a 7s kit already, use it for Tens. If you only
have a 15s kit, it will do the job, but be aware it was not designed for that level
of running intensity.

Where clubs start to consider ordering specific 10s teamwear is when:

 * They enter Tens events regularly enough to justify a dedicated kit
 * They want to protect their main 15s kit from wear at non-season events
 * The Tens tournament has its own kit compliance requirements

### Squad Size Planning

One thing that catches clubs out: Tens squads are typically 14–16 players with limited
replacements. That is smaller than a 15s touring squad, but bigger than a 7s squad.
If you are ordering kit specifically for a Tens event, size your order accordingly
rather than pulling from your 15s stock and running short.

## Can You Use One Kit Across All Three Formats?

Realistically — yes, in many situations. But there are trade-offs.

| Scenario | Works? | Trade-off |
| 7s kit used for Tens | Yes | Best option if cut is athletic and light |
| 7s kit used for 15s | Generally no | Too light for contact, no forward-specific features |
| 15s kit used for Tens | Yes, with caveats | Heavier fabric, less ideal for high-running formats |
| 15s kit used for 7s | Possible, not ideal | Weight and cut will affect running comfort |
| One kit across all three | Rare — only if kit is well-designed for versatility | Compromise on durability or performance in at least one format |

For most clubs, the practical solution is a 15s kit as the primary investment and
a separate 7s/Tens bundle for the tournament circuit. That approach keeps your season
kit in good condition and ensures you meet tournament registration requirements.

## How to Plan Your Order If You Play Multiple Formats

If your club runs across formats, here is a straightforward way to think about your
ordering plan:

1. Anchor on your 15s season first. This is your largest order, it has the longest
lead time, and it sets your brand identity. Get this in motion at least ten weeks
before your season opener.

2. Decide whether 7s and Tens share a kit. If your 7s and Tens participation overlaps
in timing, a single lightweight bundle can serve both. Confirm whether the tournament
regulations for both events are compatible with the same kit specification.

3. Factor in squad size differences. Do not order your 7s bundle in the same quantities
as your 15s order. 7s squads typically need fewer jerseys; Tens squads sit in between.

4. Build in lead time for each entry point. If you enter a 7s invitational with
four weeks’ notice, you are inside standard production time. Talk to your kit supplier
early — even before confirmation — so that production can begin the moment the entry
is accepted.

order.

## Ordering in Hong Kong and Singapore

Pillar Sports works with clubs across Hong Kong and Singapore across all three formats.
Whether you need a custom rugby jersey for a full 15s season squad, a tournament-
ready 7s bundle, or a short-run Tens kit for a specific event, we can advise on
the right specification for what you are playing and when you need it.

The earlier you come to us, the more options you have — on materials, print method,
and timeline. Last-minute rush orders are manageable, but they limit your choices.

## Final Thoughts

The biggest mistake clubs make when ordering across formats is assuming the kit
is interchangeable and ordering too late to course-correct when it is not. A 15s
jersey built for scrum reinforcement was not designed for a 7s tournament. A 7s
kit ordered the week before an event was not designed for your production timeline.

Know what format you are ordering for, plan your timelines accordingly, and if you
are in doubt about what specification suits your format, ask before you finalize
the brief — not after the jerseys arrive.

If you are putting together a custom rugby kit order and want to talk through the
right approach for your club’s mix of formats, get in touch with the Pillar Sports
team. We are based in Hong Kong and Singapore, and this is exactly what we help
clubs work through.

## Sports Tape Sponsorship vs. Wholesale: How Clubs Get Tape Without a Big Budget

- Link: https://pillarsports.com/sports-tape-sponsorship-vs-wholesale/
- Published: 2026-08-04T12:58:25+08:00
- Author: PSL Media Team

Most clubs assume there’s one way to get tape for the season: put it in the budget,
place an order, and pay the invoice. That’s true for plenty of teams — but it’s
not the only path, and for clubs with a following to offer, it’s often not the cheapest
one either.

Pillar Sports supplies squads two different ways. Knowing which one actually fits
your club before you reach out saves everyone a conversation.

## Two Ways to Get Tape Into Your Squad

[[

**Bulk / Wholesale Purchase**
Straightforward: your club orders tape at discounted
partner rates instead of retail pricing, pays for it, and there’s no sponsorship
exchange attached. This is the right path if you just need reliable, cost-effective
supply and don’t have — or don’t want to trade on — brand visibility.

**Value-in-Kind (VIK) Product Sponsorship**
Pillar Sports supplies the tape — and
where relevant, apparel or rugby gear — and instead of an invoice, your club provides
brand visibility: logos, signage, social tags, and referrals. The budget you’d have
spent on consumables gets redirected straight to athletes and programmes instead.

These aren’t competing options — plenty of clubs end up on a **mix of both**, buying
some products outright while running a sponsorship arrangement for others.

## Which Path Actually Fits Your Club?

The honest answer is that VIK sponsorship isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. It
tends to make sense for clubs, schools, or associations that have real visibility
to offer — an active social following, regular fixtures, a recognisable name in
their sport or region, or a following worth putting a logo in front of. If that’s
not where your organisation is yet, straightforward bulk purchase gets you the same
product at partner pricing without needing to build a case for sponsorship.

[[

_North Wales Crusaders – A Pillar Sports Partner_

## What “Brand Visibility” Actually Means

This isn’t vague. In practice, a VIK sponsorship arrangement typically involves
some combination of:

 * Pillar Sports logo on kit, signage, or matchday materials
 * Social media tags and mentions when the club posts about training, matches, or
   events

The scale of what’s expected is proportional to the scale of what’s provided — a
small community club offering a logo mention on social media isn’t held to the same
bar as a national federation with broadcast visibility.

[[

## What We Need From You to Build a Package

[[

To put together a partnership package, Pillar Sports typically asks for three things
upfront:

**Consumption**
Your realistic season’s usage for the products you need, so the
package actually matches what your squad goes through.

**Insights**
Any existing sponsorship decks, examples of past partners, or key events
and programmes your club runs, so the arrangement fits your existing sponsorship
structure rather than creating a new one from scratch.

**Passion**
The actual story: your athletes, your community, the impact your club
has. This is what turns a generic gear-for-logo swap into a partnership either side
actually wants to renew.

**[Ready to get started? Book a Call with Us!](https://pillarsports.com/bulk-sports-tape/)**

## What This Looks Like in Practice

Some of Pillar Sports’ longest-running partnerships are built exactly this way.
We are proud to support elite organizations like Lakapi Samoa and the Swiss Rugby
Union, who trust us as their dedicated tape supplier.. Closer to home, [several Hong Kong clubs across rugby, football, netball, and basketball run similar ongoing arrangements](https://pillarsports.com/how-pillar-sports-partners-with-hk-teams/)—
worth a read if you want to see what these relationships actually look like season
over season, in partners’ own words.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Do I have to choose one path or the other?**

No. Many clubs buy some products outright at bulk rates and run a sponsorship arrangement
for others, depending on volume and what they have to offer.

**What if our club doesn’t have much of a social following?**

Then bulk/wholesale purchase is probably the better fit — you still get partner
pricing without needing to build a sponsorship case. VIK sponsorship makes more
sense once you have visibility worth trading on.

**Does a bigger club automatically get a better sponsorship deal?**

Scale matters, but so does consumption, community story, and what you can realistically
offer. A smaller club with strong local visibility and consistent engagement can
still be a good sponsorship fit.

**Can we start with a bulk order and move to sponsorship later?**

Yes — this isn’t a one-time decision. As your club’s visibility or needs change,
the arrangement can shift too. That’s part of what the initial call is for.

## How to Choose the Right Sports Tape for Your Team

- Link: https://pillarsports.com/how-to-choose-sports-tape-for-your-team/
- Published: 2026-07-31T10:30:12+08:00
- Author: PSL Media Team

Most clubs don’t get to choose their tape once — they choose it every season, usually
under time pressure, and usually by reordering whatever was bought last time. That
works until it doesn’t: a player with sensitive skin, a squad that’s outgrown its
budget, or a physio who’s been quietly buying kinesiology tape out of pocket because
the club stock doesn’t cover it.

Choosing tape properly means starting from what you’re actually treating, not from
a product name.

## Start With What You’re Treating, Not the Brand

Every type of sports tape solves a different problem. Picking the wrong one doesn’t
just waste money — it means the tape doesn’t do what your athletes actually need.

Joint stabilisation and injury prevention — before a known injury risk, or restricting
movement during return-to-play — calls for rigid zinc oxide strapping tape. It’s
firm, non-elastic, and holds a joint in a fixed position.

Muscle support without restricting movement, especially when an athlete needs support
across several days of training and competition, calls for kinesiology tape. It
stretches with the body rather than against it.

Compression and securing dressings — wrapping without adhesive residue — is what
cohesive (elastic-adhesive) bandage is for.

Skin protection under rigid tape, particularly for high-volume matchday taping,
is pre-wrap’s job — it speeds up application and makes removal far less painful.

[[

Sensitive or reactive skin needs a hypoallergenic, latex-free option in the kit
bag as standard, not as an emergency substitution mid-season. [See our sensitive-skin guide →](https://pillarsports.com/sports-tape-for-sensitive-skin/)

## Wear Time Matters More Than People Think

One of the most common team-level mistakes is treating rigid tape and kinesiology
tape as interchangeable. They’re not, and wear time is the clearest way to see why:

| Tape Type | Best For | Typical Wear Time | Common Sports |
| Rigid strapping tape | Joint stabilisation, injury prevention, return-to-play | Single session — under 24 hours, removed immediately after activity | Rugby, football, basketball, martial arts |
| Kinesiology tape | Muscle support without restricting movement | 3–5 days continuous wear | Running, CrossFit, multi sport and day tournaments |
| Cohesive bandage | Compression, securing dressings | Session to short-term | All contact sports, clinic use |
| Pre-wrap / underwrap | Skin protection under rigid tape | Single session, worn under rigid tape | High-volume matchday taping |
| Hypoallergenic tape | Sensitive or reactive skin, any of the above uses | Matches the base tape type it replaces | Any squad with a sensitive-skin athlete |

Rigid tape left on too long risks skin breakdown and restricted circulation — it’s
built for the length of a match or session, not longer. Kinesiology tape is the
opposite: it’s designed to stay on and keep working over several days.

If you’re training in Hong Kong or Singapore, heat and humidity change how all of
this holds up in practice — worth a look at [our guide to sports tape in HK/SG summer conditions →](https://pillarsports.com/sports-tape-hong-kong-summer-guide/)
before you finalise what to stock.

![](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==)

## Match Tape to Your Sport, Loosely

Contact and high-impact sports — rugby, football, basketball, martial arts — tend
to lean more heavily on rigid strapping tape for joint protection. Sports with longer
competition windows or heavy training loads often use more kinesiology tape for
ongoing muscle support between sessions. Most squads end up needing both, plus pre-
wrap and cohesive bandage as supporting stock — which is exactly why single-type
orders tend to run out mid-season.

## How Much Should Your Team Actually Stock?

This depends heavily on squad size and how often your athletes train and compete—
enough that we’ve written a separate breakdown of real consumption numbers by club
size. [See how much tape a club actually goes through →](https://pillarsports.com/strapping-tape-guide/#elementor-toc__heading-anchor-6)

The short version: once you’re ordering across a full squad and multiple grades,
per-roll retail pricing stops making sense, and that’s the point where sourcing
through a bulk arrangement starts to matter more than the product choice itself.

## One Supplier or Several?

Once you know which tape types your squad needs, the next decision is where they
come from. Sourcing rigid tape, kinesiology tape, pre-wrap, and cohesive bandage
from separate suppliers means separate invoices, separate delivery schedules, and
separate relationships to manage — for consumables your team goes through every
season, not just once.

Consolidating under one sports tape supplier simplifies that without narrowing your
options, as long as that supplier actually carries the full range.

[[

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Can one type of tape cover everything my team needs?**

Rarely. Most squads need at least rigid strapping tape and kinesiology tape for
different purposes, plus pre-wrap and cohesive bandage as supporting stock. Relying
on one type usually means physios improvising with the wrong product for a given
injury.

**How do I know if my team needs a hypoallergenic option?**

If your squad is large enough to run a full season, it’s likely at least one athlete
has sensitive skin or a reaction risk. It’s simpler to stock a hypoallergenic option
as standard than to source one reactively.

**Is kinesiology tape a replacement for rigid strapping tape?**

No — they solve different problems. Rigid tape restricts movement to protect a joint;
kinesiology tape supports muscle function without restricting movement. Most teams
need both, not one instead of the other.

**When does it make sense to switch from retail to bulk ordering?**

Once you’re buying across a full squad and multiple grades or age groups each season,
per-roll retail pricing adds up fast, and a bulk or partner arrangement usually
becomes the more cost-effective option. [See how bulk ordering works →](https://pillarsports.com/bulk-sports-tape/)
