There are three ways to buy a mouthguard in Hong Kong and about a tenfold difference
in price between the cheapest and the dearest. Most people either overpay for protection
they do not need, or buy the cheap one at the pharmacy and stop wearing it by the
third session.

This is what is actually available here, what it costs, and how to work out which
one you need.

## **The three options**

### **1. Stock guards — the pharmacy option**

Pre-formed, no moulding, sold in a blister pack. They arrive one shape and stay
that shape.

Avoid them. A stock guard does not conform to your teeth, so it moves under impact
and you have to bite down to keep it in place — which is exactly what you cannot
do when someone is talking to you or you are breathing hard. Most people who own
one stop wearing it. The cheapest guard is the one you do not wear.

### **2. Boil-and-bite — the sensible default**

Softened in hot water and moulded to your own teeth at home. This is what almost
every club and school player in Hong Kong wears, and for good reason.

The important distinction inside this category is **single-layer versus double-layer**.
A single layer compresses on the first heavy contact and does not recover, so it
stops protecting long before it looks worn out. A double-layer guard has a firmer
outer layer to spread the force and a softer inner layer to hold the fit. The price
difference is small; the difference in protection is not.

### **3. Custom-fitted from a dentist**

Made from an impression or a 3D scan of your teeth. The best fit available, the
thinnest profile for the protection given, and by a distance the most expensive
route.

Worth it if you take contact several times a week, if you have had dental work you
are protecting, or if you compete at a level where a lost tooth is a real career
cost. Not worth it for a child whose teeth are still moving — the guard stops fitting
as the mouth changes.

## **What it costs here**

The OPRO figure comes from a Hong Kong stockist listing and should be confirmed.
The Decathlon, SISU and dental-clinic figures need checking against current local
pricing — do not publish a price you have not seen this month.

| **Option** | **Typical Hong Kong price** | **Verdict** |
| Stock guard, pharmacy | Low | Skip it |
| Boil-and-bite, single layer | Low | Fine for occasional use, replace often |
| **Boil-and-bite, double layer** | **From around HK$220** | **Where most players should land** |
| Premium boil-and-bite (OPRO Silver, Platinum) | Around HK$379 at HK stockists | Good guards, priced at a premium |
| Custom from a dentist | Significantly higher — get a quote | For serious or frequent contact |

## **Where to buy in Hong Kong**

**Decathlon** — the widest cheap range, physical stores across the city, and you
can try sizing in person. Their own-brand guards are entry level; treat them as
a starting point rather than a season’s protection. [Browse Decathlon](https://www.decathlon.com.hk/en-HK/search?query=mouth%20guard&indexName=prod_pim_v1_index&queryID=d609de9dc3e0d9ab93c2d2851a4a3e79),
you can also buy [Pillar Sports tapes products on Decathlon](https://www.decathlon.com.hk/en-HK/search?query=tapes&indexName=prod_pim_v1_index&queryID=ec3c38365a7651d1323f16d09140d410&brand=PILLAR+SPORTS)!

**Escapade Sports and Streamline Sports** — both carry OPRO, both ship locally,
both aimed at the rugby market. If OPRO is the brand you want, they are the straightforward
route. [Browse Streamline Sports](https://streamlinesports.com.hk/search?options%5Bprefix%5D=last&q=mouth+guard&filter.p.product_type=).

**Pillar Sports** — that is us. We distribute[ SafeJawz in Hong Kong](https://pillarsports.com/product/safejawz-mouthguard-marvel/),
hold stock here, price in Hong Kong dollars and ship by SF Express. We also supply
clubs and schools directly, which is worth a conversation if you are kitting out
a squad rather than one player.

**Your dentist** — for custom guards. Ask for a quote before committing; prices
vary considerably between clinics in Hong Kong.

**Carousell and marketplace listings** — a mouthguard is a personal-hygiene item
that sits in someone’s mouth. Buy it new.

**Ordering from overseas** — OPRO, SISU and most of the DTC night-guard brands will
ship to Hong Kong, but you are paying in GBP or USD and waiting on international
post. Check whether a local stockist carries the same model before you do.

## **The brands you will actually see**

An honest read on each. We sell one of these, so weigh that accordingly.

**[OPRO](https://www.opro.com/).** The strongest brand in this market and the one
most Hong Kong rugby players know. Official mouthguard of England Rugby and Wales
Rugby Union, and their Instant Custom-Fit line genuinely narrows the gap to a dental
guard. They are good products at a premium price, and they are widely stocked here.
If budget is not a constraint and you want the safest-known name, this is it.

**[SafeJawz](https://www.safejawz.com/).** What we distribute. Double-layer construction,
developed with dentists, junior and senior sizing, ortho versions for anyone in
braces, and a case with every guard. Cheaper than the OPRO equivalents. The Marvel
range is licensed superhero styling, which is a selling point for a nine-year-old
and irrelevant to a 30-year-old — the guard underneath is the same either way. [Buy SafeJawz](https://pillarsports.com/product/safejawz-mouthguard-marvel/).

**[SISU](https://www.sisuguard.com/).** Very thin profile with a distinctive perforated
design, popular with people who cannot tolerate bulk. Divisive: some people rate
them highly, others find the thinness unconvincing. Harder to find in Hong Kong
than OPRO.

## **How to fit a boil-and-bite guard**

⌊YouTube thumbnail⌉⌊YouTube thumbnail⌉⌊YouTube icon⌉⌊YouTube icon⌉

Most people rush this, and a rushed mould is the main reason a decent guard feels
bad.

 1. Boil the kettle, then let the water stand for 30 seconds. Straight off the boil
is too hot and can over-soften the material.
 2. Submerge the guard for **20–30 seconds**. Not longer.
 3. Lift it out, shake off the water, and test the temperature against your lip before
    it goes near your teeth.
 4. Seat it over the upper teeth and bite down firmly. Then suck in, and press the
guard against your teeth and gums with your tongue and fingers for a further 20
    seconds.
 5. Drop it into cold water to set.

If the fit is wrong, repeat it. The material re-moulds. If it still will not seat
after a second attempt, you have the wrong size.

## **Looking after it in this climate**

Hong Kong humidity is genuinely hard on mouthguards. A guard that goes back into
a case damp, into a kitbag, in August, will grow something.

Rinse in cold water after every session, let it air-dry fully before it goes in
the case, and keep the case ventilated. Never leave it in a car or on a windowsill—
heat warps the mould permanently. Replace it when the bite impressions flatten out
or the edges start to split, which for anyone training two or three times a week
means about once a season.

## **So which one should you buy?**

 * **Playing school or club sport, once or twice a week:** a double-layer boil-and-
   bite. Anything more is over-buying.
 * **Training in a combat gym several times a week:** the same, replaced more often—
or a custom guard if you are competing.
 * **Wearing braces:** an ortho model, and mention it to your orthodontist.
 * **Buying for a child:** junior sizing, boil-and-bite, and expect to replace it
as they grow. A custom guard is wasted on a mouth that is still changing.
 * **Competing at a level where your teeth are part of your livelihood:** see a
   dentist.

For most people reading this, the honest answer is a double-layer boil-and-bite
guard that fits properly and gets worn every session. Which sport you play changes
the details —[ we have broken that down here](https://pillarsports.com/mouthguard-for-your-sport/).

## **FAQ**

**How much should I pay for a mouthguard in Hong Kong?**

A double-layer boil-and-bite guard starts around HK$220. Premium branded versions
run higher, and a custom guard from a dentist is a different order of cost — get
a quote first.

**Is a boil-and-bite mouthguard good enough?**

For the large majority of club, school and gym athletes, yes — provided it is double-
layer and moulded properly. The gap to a custom guard is real but smaller than the
price difference suggests.

**Where can I buy a mouthguard in Hong Kong today?**

Decathlon stores carry entry-level guards off the shelf. Escapade and Streamline
stock OPRO. We ship SafeJawz by SF Express. Dentists make custom guards to order.

**How long does a mouthguard last?**

About a season for someone training two or three times a week. Replace it when the
bite marks flatten or the edges tear.

**Can I put a mouthguard in the dishwasher?**

No. Heat warps it. Cold water and air-drying only.
